Chinatown Soup is pleased to present WAYAKANA, the first solo show and first ready-to-wear collection by Luzbeidy Monterrosa Atencio. Titled La Palabra del Desierto ("The Word of the Desert"), the collection was born in La Guajira. From the land. From its memory. From the knowledge of the Wayuu people.
Join us for a soft opening on Wednesday, September 16, from 3–6 pm, as the installation comes together. Launch day and collection sale is Thursday, September 17, from 12–6 pm.
About the artist:
Luzbeidy Monterrosa Atencio is a Wayuu filmmaker, writer, textile artist and activist of the Siijono eirüku clan, La Guajira. Her short film Jülapüin Yonna premiered at the 2026 Berlinale (Generation 14Plus), was featured in SFC | Rendez-vous Industry at Cannes, and won the Live Action Short Award at imagineNATIVE 2026, qualifying it for Academy Award consideration.
Through WAYAKANA, founded and directed alongside a collective of women artisans from the Siijono eirüku clan, she turns visual storytelling and ancestral worldview into contemporary design. La Palabra del Desierto is an act of textile activism: fashion as a political medium to hold living memory against extractivism and environmental crisis. Several pieces use the ancient A'nuushi technique over six weeks of continuous weaving each.
