To mark Chinatown Soup's decade of existence, founder and director Michelle Marie Esteva curated a group of 22 artists and friends to produce a commemorative Tarot pack in conversation with the Major Arcana. Each artist was assigned an archetype from this sequence, divined from their experiences at Chinatown Soup. The cards feature a variety of styles and mediums referencing soup in some way, literal or abstract. From a humble food staple to an icon of the pop art movement to astrophysicist analogies for describing the birth of the universe, the interpretive possibilities of soup are vast and wonderful. Likewise, this project activates an ancient system of oracular, visual art to celebrate and archive an artistic journey seeking creative freedom in the 21st century.

The Spirit Soup Arcana will be published in Fall 2024 to coincide with a group exhibition of the deck’s original works.
